Giving Up: A Different Kind of Writer’s Block

Everyone has gotten to a point in their career where they felt like they could still produce at a high levels, but they struggled to figure out what their purpose was in this endeavor. I have gotten to that point many times and am currently trying to get over that hurdle. I realize there’s no basis to these feelings and I should produce until I am able to break through to the other side and overcome this limitation. At the same time, every time I go to start typing something shuts me down and I end up doing something else entirely.

I am a firm believer that anyone who does anything isn’t a major contributor to whatever it is that they do unless they actually do it. Talking about what you’re doing or what you have done without doing anything currently is a waste of time. In this situation, you’re only as good as what you’ve done, not what you’re doing now. This way of thinking might have worked in a time when information moved slowly. It certainly doesn’t work now. If you have let a full day or week pass in between pieces of created content, you might as well pack it in. Someone else is coming right behind you to take your spot. The only difference is they’re not stuck wallowing in their own self pity. They’re actually contributing.
